Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment options are currently available for someone who tests positive for COVID?

Paxlovid is a prescription antiviral medication that works to stop the virus from multiplying and reduces the amount of the virus in your body. Learn more about Paxlovid on hhs.gov.

What is a booster shot?

A COVID booster shot is an additional dose of a vaccine given after the protection provided by the original shot(s) has begun to decrease over time. Boosters are usually given after the immunity from the initial dose(s) naturally starts to wane. A booster is designed to help people maintain their level of immunity for longer.

Who is currently eligible for a booster in the United States?

Patients who have received their second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines at least 6 months ago and are:

  • 65 and above, or

  • 18 and above and working in a high-risk setting like healthcare or frontline workers, or

  • 18 and above and living in a high-risk setting like long-term care facilities

  • 18 and above and with underlying medical conditions e.g. HIV, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, tobacco user, immune suppressed

Patients who have received a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago and are:

  • 18 and above (patients who received a Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine are eligible for booster from Johnson & Johnson, Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech)

How to schedule an appointment for a booster at MHF?

You may schedule an appointment for the third-dose vcaccinations or booster shots at MHF Sunset by calling 310-550-1010, or by email at menshealth@menshealthfound.org.

What is a "third-dose vaccination"?

A third dose of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna) is identical to the first two doses. It can help protect people with weakened immune systems who did not have a strong enough response to the first two doses of one of the mRNA vaccines. Such people can get a third dose as soon as 28 days after a second dose. The FDA has authorized, and the CDC recommends, that those with certain medical conditions that suppress the immune system get a third dose of the same brand of COVID-19 vaccine that they initially received.

Who is eligible for a third dose?

If you received a full series of Pfizer or Moderna at least 28 days ago AND have one of the following risk factors, you may receive a third dose.

  • Receive active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood.

  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.

  • Have either had a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.

  • Were diagnosed with DiGeorge syndrome or Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome.

  • Are diagnosed with HIV and have a high viral load or low CD4 count, or are not currently taking medication to treat HIV.

  • Are taking drugs such as high-dose steroids or other medications that may cause severe suppression of the immune system.

Can I receive a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at MHF?

Men’s Health Foundation began offering third doses to eligible populations in August 2021. If you have not received a third dose and meet the eligibility requirements, please schedule an appointment at either our MHF pharmacy by calling the pharmacy directly at (310) 205-0742 or calling our offices to schedule as a nurse visit at one of our clinic locations.

How do I know if I need a third dose?

Please see the eligibility criteria for third dose or consult directly with your medical provider to determine if you need a third dose.

How long after getting my initial COVID-19 vaccines can I get an additional dose?

CDC recommends the additional dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine be administered at least four weeks after a second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Can you mix and match the vaccines?

For people who received either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine series, a third dose of the same mRNA vaccine should be used. A person should not receive more than three mRNA vaccine doses. If the mRNA vaccine product given for the first two doses is not available or is unknown, either mRNA COVID-19 vaccine product may be administered.

What are the benefits of people receiving an additional vaccine dose?

Data from a small clinical trial show that a Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot increased the immune response in trial participants who finished their primary series 6 months earlier. With an increased immune response, people should have improved protection against COVID-19, including Delta and Omicron variants.

What are the risks of receiving an additional vaccine dose?

There is limited information about the risks of receiving an additional dose of vaccine, and the safety, efficacy, and benefit of additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine in immunocompromised people continues to be evaluated. So far, reactions reported after the third mRNA dose were similar to that of the two-dose series: fatigue and pain at injection site were the most commonly reported side effects, and overall, most symptoms were mild to moderate. However, as with the two-dose series, serious side effects are rare, but may occur.
